Without Lea Campos, many things would not be as they are today. The Brazilian was the world's first female referee in the early 70s - despite fierce opposition from a certain Mr Havelanges. Bibiana Steinhaus is a German referee and was the first woman to referee men's professional matches in Germany. She also officiated the women's final at the 2011 World Cup and at the 2012 Olympics. The final forerunner in our trilogy is Stéphanie Frappart of France. She was the first referee to officiate major men's international matches: the Chelsea-Liverpool Super Cup in 2019 and a Champions League match in 2020, so her selection as World Women's Referee 2019 was only the logical consequence.
